Rebots

What is Rebots?

Rebots is a first-person automation game with an expansive universe to explore. Using intelligent(ish) rebots, you can gather resources, terraform planets, and scan all of the things. Traverse the galaxy in the name of space capitalism!

Rebots shares similarities to automation games like Satisfactory. It's about connecting robots with different functions so they can gather resources and craft more advanced materials; all to complete objectives for cute alien quest givers. A central part of this mechanic is that you can affect the climate of the asteroids you land on; a requirement to get certain animals and plants to thrive.

My Role

I worked as the Level Designer and one of the Writers. For this project I worked in Unity and with Yarn. I utilized xNode as a visual scripting system. Additionally I worked closely with the Game Designers to help figure out the climate system, resource balance and game progression.

As a Level Designer I created the hub of the game, The Spaceport. I was responsible for the whole process, from the earliest blockouts to decorating it with art and writing dialogue for the NPCs. As you progress in the game The Spaceport gradually gets repaired, making it quite beautiful.

Using xNode I was responsible for the asteroids in the game. Utilizing PCG graphs I controlled the generation to be balanced across the whole game, making sure the player would never be locked out of resources while still providing some sense of progression. I helped design what kind of biomes the asteroids could have and resource distribution across them.

As a Writer I designed the quests and wrote dialogue for them, provided dialogue for the NPCs and helped fill out the informative parts such as the in-game codex and some tutorial sections. This was done in Yarn.
